Initially, Ian studied the first two years of a Pharmacy course at the Victorian College of Pharmacy before completing tertiary qualifications in Biochemistry, Microbiology and Genetics at RMIT. Ian then became interested in medical research and completed a B.Sc. (Hon.) degree, followed by a Doctorate (into the Biochemistry of connective tissue especially proteoglycans and collagen) at Monash University. This study involved research into arthritis and ageing. He then joined his father, Dr. Glen Dettman, at Oakleigh Pathology Service.Ā
Over the next fifteen years, (1973-1988) he gained extensive hands-on experience in biochemistry, microbiology, haemotology and serology. Ian managed the pathology practice and helped it gain NATA accreditation as a category 1 Pathology and became a Registered Pathology Practitioner of several stand-alone pathology laboratories including a branch at Knox Private Hospital.Ā
During his time at the Pathology practice, Ian also became involved in Vitamin C research with Dr. Glen Dettman and Dr. Archie Kalokerinos. This research continues to this day. Ian personally developed patents concerning the manufacture of Vitamin C and extended his knowledge of nutrition, diet and lifestyle by becoming a qualified Natural Therapist, continuing to practice for over 20 years. Ian also became a governor of the prestigious Southern School of Natural Therapies where he sat on numerous committee meetings concerned with course content and natural therapies registration and is now a Fellow of the Australian Natural Therapies Association (FANTA).Ā Ā
Ian has lectured to many Doctors around the world including Japan, China, Singapore, New Zealand and South America and also lectures within Australia. He has tutored in Biochemistry to medical students at Monash University, and lectured to students at the Southern School of Natural Therapies. He has co-authored numerous papers as well as the book āVitamin C ā Natureās Miraculous Healing Missileā with his father Dr. Glen Dettman and Dr. Archie Kalokerinos. Ian was privileged and honored to meet Professor Linus Pauling (the only person to have won two unshared Nobel prizes) at his home in Big Sur, California in November 1993. Ian and Glen received a grant from the Linus Pauling Institute for a research project to test Vitamin C levels on new born babies delivered at a Community Hospital. The results were published in The Australian Nurses Journal. In 1971, along with Dr Glen Dettman, Ian commenced the manufacture of intravenous Sodium Ascorbate and at this stage the early seeds of the organization, Biological Therapies were established.Ā In support of this intravenous Vitamin C manufacture, a research organization, the DETKAL, was established.Ā Ā
In 1988, Ian sold the pathology service and dedicated his time to manufacturing injectable nutrients including intravenous Vitamin C and a range of injectable Vitamin Bās, as well as chelating agents under the umbrella, Biological Therapies. The company started with one factory and continues considerable growth to this day.Ā Clinical trials are currently underway around the world using Biological Therapies injectable products. The aseptic manufacture of injectables is at the top end of the sterile pharmaceutical manufacturing market place. With Ian as the Managing Director, Biological Therapies gained its sterile manufacturing license from the TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration).Ā Ā
Ian is also the Founder and Managing Director of the Australasian Institute for Medical Nutrition which tutors Doctors and Nurses in the theory and practice of injectable nutrition.Ā He continues to lecture and present videos for medical training to ACNEM, NIIM (The National Institute of Integrative Medicine), Genostics and AIMN and is actively involved in research projects around the world regarding injectable Vitamin C.Ā Ā
