Victor Leach

Victor has worked as a radiation health physicist and atmospheric scientist for the past 50 years in both the private sector (uranium & coal mining) and public sector with several Commonwealth (Australian Radiation Laboratory now ARPANSA) and State Government Health Departments (QLD/NT). He was at the inaugural formation of the Australasian Radiation Protection Society (ARPS) in 1975 and has been a past treasurer and on the organising committee of conferences in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Darwin.

He has been involved in many occupational and environmental aspects of mining and non-mining projects at both the planning and operational stages. Just before retirement, he was a University Radiation Advisor (RPA) at both the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and the University of Queensland (UQ). In the two years before retirement, he assisted in obtaining all the radiation health approvals for the UQ 18 MeV cyclotron.

He has been increasingly interested in non-ionising EMF-RF standards compared to the setting of ionising radiation standards. He advocates for adopting the precautionary principle, particularly as it applies to long-term mobile phone use. He was one of the founding members of Oceania Radiofrequency Scientific Advisory Association Inc. (ORSAA).
