MEET THE PRESENTERS

Dr. Jason Hawrelak

BNat(Hons), PhD, ND, FNHAA, MASN, FACN 
Considered one of the leading experts in the treatment of gastrointestinal conditions with natural medicines, Dr. Hawrelak’s passion for gastrointestinal health, the gastrointestinal microbiota, and probiotics was ignited during the final year of his naturopathic training. Subsequently, Jason did his Honours (First Class) and PhD degrees in the areas of the gastrointestinal microbiota, irritable bowel syndrome, and the clinical applications of pre- and probiotics. He has written extensively in Australian and International textbooks and journals on these topics. Dr. Hawrelak is a naturopath, herbalist, and nutritionist with over 24 years of clinical experience. He regularly consults with patients from all over Australia and overseas who come to him for his expertise, extensive background knowledge, and experience in treating gastrointestinal conditions. It is for these same reasons that he regularly provides mentoring to other healthcare practitioners. Jason believes in the importance of ‘food as medicine’ and an individualised approach to care – using a range of skills and healing modalities, including dietary guidance, herbal medicine, nutritional supplementation, and lifestyle counselling to help patients achieve their health goals. Dr. Hawrelak has taught health professionals at both the undergraduate and postgraduate level for over 20 years. He teaches natural approaches to Gastroenterology within the University of Western States Master of Science in Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine program (Portland, Oregon). In addition, Dr. Hawrelak is Chief Research Officer at ProbioticAdvisor.com and founded the Microbiome Restoration Center. 

Dawn Whitten

ND, BNat(Hons), IBCLC, FNHAA
Dawn Whitten is a Naturopath and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. She is passionate about protecting and nurturing the microbiome of the next generation and has a broad base of clinical experience with a focus on women’s health through pregnancy and beyond, as well as infant and toddler health. She has been in clinical practice for 18 years and is part of Goulds Natural Medicine, a busy apothecary, clinic and associated herb farm in Tasmania, Australia. Dawn obtained a Bachelor of Naturopathy with First Class Honours from Southern Cross University. Her Honours topic was within the field of herb-drug interactions. She is published in the peer-reviewed literature and has contributed to clinical textbooks (including the Breastfeeding chapter in the recently published Hechtman L Ed, 2020, Advanced Clinical Naturopathic Medicine 2020, Elsevier). Dawn coordinates two units within the Evidence-based Complementary Medicine post-graduate program in the College of Health & Medicine at the University of Tasmania. She is part of the research team at Probiotic.Advisor.com and a clinical director at Goulds Natural Medicine in Hobart. 

Dr. Nirala Jacobi

BHSc, ND
Dr. Nirala Jacobi is a naturopathic doctor and internationally recognized expert on small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). She is the creator of the SIBO Biphasic Diet, a resource that has helped tens of thousands of SIBO sufferers around the world. Dr Jacobi is the host of The SIBO Doctor Podcast and the founder of The SIBO Doctor, an online educational platform that includes a practitioner certification program. She is also the medical director of SIBOtest, providing innovative testing options for SIBO and IBS. Dr. Jacobi is known for her systematic and effective approach to diagnosing and treating SIBO and other functional digestive disorders. Having received her naturopathic doctorate in 1998 from the esteemed Bastyr University in Seattle, USA she brings more than two decades of clinical experience and expertise to her clinic, the Biome Clinic.

Dr. Arun Dhir

MS, FRCS(UK), FRACS
Dr. Arun Dhir is a Melbourne based Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgeon. He has a busy private practice that has a strong focus in the area of obesity management and gut health. Dr. Arun’s current research is on the changes in gut microbiome after obesity surgery and on reflux disease. He has also written several books and has published several articles in scientific journals. Dr. Arun’s published works include Happy Gut Healthy Weight (Balboa Press 2018), Creating a New You Health Journal (Metagenics 2019), and Your Mess Has a Message (2021). Dr. Arun is also a Yoga and Meditation teacher that allows him to better understand and assist his clients with the mindbody-gut connection. He regularly writes and speaks about gut health, gut microbiome, obesity, gastrointestinal surgery and healing. Dr. Arun’s life vision is to bridge the art of Eastern healing and the science of Western medicine through education and research. Dr. Arun loves cycling, hiking and playing drums. Dr. James Read

MBBS, FRACGP, FACNEM, MPH(Nutr), GradDip
Dr. Read is a holistic GP who practices both integrative holistic medicine in private practice and as a procedural rural GP practicing both anaesthesia and emergency medicine in rural hospitals. He is an internationally renowned medical educator having taught nutritional environmental medicine at conferences in India, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, and New Zealand for organisations including the CSIRO, ACNEM, AIMA, MINDD and the Australasian Society of Lifestyle Medicine. His post graduate qualifications include a Master of Public Health majoring in Nutrition, a Fellowship of General Practice, Rural Medicine, and Nutritional Environmental Medicine. Dr. Read is a teaching faculty member and previous Vice President of ACNEM. His private practice focusses on complex conditions including chronic fatigue, irritable bowel syndrome, intolerances, chronic pain, mental health particularly PTSD, obesity, and endocrine conditions. He has recently moved to a farm in the Riverina where he will be running health retreats for health practitioners. His new practice All in Health will be located at the Pro Patria Centre an integrative multidisciplinary centre spread over 7 acres of an ex-monastery in Wagga Wagga, where veterans and emergency services workers can access care from art, music, horticultural therapy to transcranial magnetic stimulation, neurofeedback and hyperbaric medicine.

Dr. Joanna Harnett

PhD, MHSc, BHSc(Compl. Med)
Dr. Joanna Harnett holds a Bachelor and Master of Health Science (Complementary Medicine). She completed her PhD in 2013 in the field of nutritional pharmacology. Her PhD research explored the association between the gastrointestinal microbiome and coeliac disease. Joanna is a senior lecturer (complementary medicines) within the Faculty of Medicine Health at the University of Sydney’s Pharmacy School. Her teaching and research activity include: the appropriate and safe use of complementary medicine products, integrative medicine education and communication, and gastrointestinal health and the microbiome. Joanna supervises higher degree research students in these three areas. Her teaching role includes the development and delivery of evidence-based complementary medicine education for undergraduate and post-graduate pharmacy students. Prior to her academic career, she practiced as a Naturopath for 15 years in an integrative medical practice. She currently serves on the board of the International Society for Traditional, Complementary, Integrative Medicine Research. She is a member of the Australian TGA Advisory Committee for Complementary Medicines.

Dr. Michael Ruscio

DNM, DC
Dr. Michael Ruscio is a doctor, clinical researcher, and author working fervently to reform and improve the fields of functional and integrative medicine. With his clinical and research teams, he scours existing studies to inform his ongoing clinical research, patient care, and guidance for health seekers and fellow clinicians around the world. His primary focus is digestive health and its impact on other facets of health, including energy, sleep, mood, and thyroid function and optimization. Dr. Ruscio’s book, Healthy Gut, Healthy You, has paved the way for a ‘start with the gut’ philosophy that has enabled doctors and patients to see improved outcomes with minimal expense and effort. Since 2011, Dr. Ruscio has pioneered the way to providing practical, cost-effective functional medicine care by pragmatically applying evidence-based therapies to thousands of people with real symptoms. Dr. Ruscio’s ability to objectively analyze medical literature has made him a trusted voice of reason, which he shares in his top-rated podcast and blog, and in a newsletter for functional medicine practitioners.

Alyssa Tait

BPhysio, MSc(HNFM), PGCert(CPFR), AdvDip(Nat), Dip(WHM), GradDip(NutMed)
Alyssa Tait is a clinical Naturopath and Physiotherapist focusing on gut and bowel dysfunction, and persistent pelvic and abdominal pain. She has a Master of Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine from the University of Western States, Portland, Oregon. Alyssa has a special interest in the gut and urogenital microbiomes and disorders of gut-brain interaction. She started her career as a physiotherapist in the public health system focusing on pelvic floor, bladder and bowel function, but a surplus of questions drove her further up the gastrointestinal tract to further study, first in Nutritional Medicine, then later in Naturopathy.  She has spent 19 years in private practice solving complex clinical puzzles through a combined naturopathy and physiotherapy lens. Alyssa is on faculty at the University of Western States and is committed to helping students and clinicians apply research evidence in a way that’s practical. In doing so she hopes to contribute to bridging the gap between orthodox medicine and naturopathic medicine, having spent her career with one foot in each camp.  

Dr. Anil Asthana

MBBS, MRCS, FRACP
Dr. Anil Asthana is originally from the UK. He completed his undergraduate medical degree from King’s College London in the UK and is currently a member of both the Royal College of Surgeons of England (MRCS) and the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP). He has published multiple papers in peer-reviewed journals, textbook chapters and continues his research interests with a focus on training physicians using ultrasound in both inflammatory bowel disease and functional gut disorders. In particular, he believes in holistic medicine and has a passion for advocating and educating the public and clinicians on digestive disease care. His particular areas of expertise include the brain-gut-microbiome axis, irritable bowel syndrome, food intolerances and inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis). Dr. Asthana is the founding Chair for GENIUS (National Intestinal Ultrasound Committee) and is the national founding and current chair for GESA (National Gastroenterology Society) Private Practice Network. He received the prestigious VESKI award from the Victorian Government for his work on intestinal ultrasound in Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. His practice is based in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne including Cabrini Health (Hawthorn and Malvern) and Knox Private Hospital (Wantirna). He has an honorary appointment at The Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Dr. Steven Sandberg-Lewis

MA(Cantab), MSc 
Dr. Steven Sandberg-Lewis has been a practicing naturopathic physician since his graduation from the National University of Natural Medicine (NUNM) in 1978. He has been a clinical and didactic professor since 1996, teaching a variety of courses but primarily focusing on gastroenterology and GI physical medicine. His private practice is at Hive Mind Medicine in Portland, Oregon. Hive Mind Medicine is a collaborative practitioner group focused on digestive and mental/emotional health. Sandberg-Lewis is a popular international lecturer at functional medicine seminars, presents webinars and is frequently interviewed on issues of digestive health and disease. In 2010 he co-founded the SIBO Center at NUNM specialising in diagnosis, treatment, education and research. In 2014 he was named one of the “Top Docs” in Portland monthly magazine’s yearly healthcare issue and in 2015 was inducted into the OANP/NUNM Hall of Fame. He is the author of the column entitled “Functional Gastroenterology Bolus” in the Townsend letter and the medical textbook Functional Gastroenterology: Assessing and Addressing the Causes of Functional Digestive Disorders, Second edition, 2017. Within gastroenterology, he has special interest and expertise in inflammatory bowel disease (including microscopic colitis), irritable bowel syndrome (including post-infectious IBS), Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO), hiatal hernia, gastroesophageal and bile reflux (GERD), biliary dyskinesia, and chronic states of nausea and vomiting.
