Antimicrobial herbs are often used to treat microbial dysbiosis, but what is the impact on the whole gut microbiome?
The acceleration of metagenomic analysis allows in-depth insights into the gut microbiome to help us further understand the impact certain antimicrobial plant compounds might have, not only on pathogenic strains, but also on commensal microbial species. The question arises – are we doing more harm than good?
This presentation will look at emerging evidence exploring the impact antimicrobial prescribing may be having on the whole gut microbiome. Clinical consideration will be given to the appropriate use of antimicrobials, when indicated, for supporting overall microbiome balance.

Topics covered:
  • The impact of antimicrobials on the whole gut microbiome and health-associated species
  • The interpretation of gastrointestinal test results to assess whether pathogen eradication is required
  • Supporting the gut microbiome when antimicrobial use is indicated
  • Nutritional and lifestyle interventions for dysbiosis and pathogen management
